Field Trips

Field Trips are one of the pillars of our club.  We have an active Field Trip program, spaced throughout the club year.   Many of them are free, some are done via carpool where we ask everyone to chip in for gas.   One or two bus trips may also be organized for more distant travel, and early payment is required.

Field trips give members the opportunity to discover new locations, improve their techniques and interact with other photographers.  This is the best way to learn more about your camera, and really get to know your fellow members.

Field trips will be announced in advance at club meetings and can be found on the Event Calendar.   In most cases, these trips are for members-only and as such you must be logged into the website to see them.  Registration and payment is also normally done via the Event Listing.   It is always good to register as early as possible, as in many cases there are a limited number of spots open.

A typical day:

  • Gather at a common meeting place to share rides and to mix new members or visitors with veteran members to make new people feel comfortable and included.
  • Travel by vehicle to the destination, and photograph for 3 to 4 hours after which we adjourn for lunch and a pleasant social time together at a reserved restaurant.

Most trips start early and end by mid-day, though we may sometimes extend the day depending on the subject matter and/or the desire of those who wish to do so.   The trips go rain or shine, as weather conditions may be different at the intended destination. It is also good to learn to photograph in all types of weather. Fun and fellowship can be had no matter the weather.

Goals of the field trips are as follows:

  • The most important one, HAVE FUN!
  • Meet new people
  • Share photographic tips and ideas
  • Grow in your photography

Techniques and Equipment:

Some trips will be preceded by either a brief explanation of techniques at the meeting place, a workshop or a SIG meeting. Often details will be found within the calendar event, and will include suggestions on the theme as well as equipment to bring.  Please let the trip leader know if you need help.

Registration:

You must register for field trips in advance, so that the Trip Leader knows to expect you.  In some cases, you may bring a guest: this will be indicated in the calendar invite.  When there is a fee for the trip, details will be listed in the calendar entry and you will receive an email within 60 days of the event, asking for payment.  Generally speaking, fees are not refundable unless the event is cancelled.

Field Trip Galleries:

Members are encouraged to upload images captured during field trips to their libraries and to assign them to galleries set up for the purpose. We all benefit and learn from the unique perspectives of fellow members as a result.
