Speaker Night: Framing Reality – Exploring the World of Photojournalism

Session Description:

Join us for an engaging evening exploring the world of photojournalism. Katie Oates, our guest speaker, will guide us through this powerful genre, introducing influential and renowned photographers and showcasing their work. She will provide insight into the diverse perspectives and approaches within photojournalism, helping us understand how photographers capture stories that reveal human struggle, conflict, and resilience.

This unique session combines expert insight with firsthand artistic experience, offering attendees an in-depth look at the ethical, emotional, and creative dimensions of photojournalism. Explore how photographers bear witness to reality, evoke empathy, and illuminate stories that might otherwise go unseen.

Katie Oates Bio:

Katie Oates holds a PhD in Art and Visual Culture from Western University, where she has held various research, writing, and editing positions. Her areas of research include histories and theories of photography as they intersect with women’ histories through lenses of gender and affect theories. She sits on the board for tba: Journal for Art, Media, and Visual Culture. Her writing has been published in The Senses and Society, The Art of Ectoplasm: Encounters with Winnipeg’s Ghost Photographs, The Journal of Stained Glass, RACAR, and Refract: An Open Access Visual Arts Journal.

We charge a nominal $12 CAD, payable via PayPal.  (If you have not attended an LCC event before, you will be asked to create a guest account, so we know how to contact you.)
